Substitution Strategies

Coaches can give out rewards to players in three ways: positive feedback, minutes, and touches. Effective substitution improves mental training (self-efficacy, cognitive anxiety, and experience) and performance among both individual players and the entire team. Coaches must find players who can play well and combinations that play well together to maximize team success.

Fifteen to twenty percent of youth suffer from some sort of mental illness. Coaches observe players closely on a daily basis and during stressful situations. Often, teenagers are encountering stressful situations for the first time and coaches can provide important guidance. Proper nutrition can facilitate physical and mental health.

The references can provide details, highlight important points, or answer any questions that an employer might ask. Coaches may serve as references for players in order to help them find their first job.

Alcohol has become a major influence in the lives of today's youths. Those who have three to four drinks at least once per week will experience reduced performance of both mind and bodies. Coaches must model appropriate behavior and monitor players in order to protect the health - first and foremost - and performance of the players on the team.

After a competition, players (and coaches) have difficulty assessing their performances. How did they do? Did they do their best? Can they do better? In order to improve, athletes need to accurately understand how they performed - without letting the outcome get in the way.

Teacher-coaches work constantly to keep student-athletes engaged during the entire season and school year. The lives of teenagers are very complicated and sometimes basketball and studying pale in comparison to other obligations. When attendance falters, intensity suffers, or mental training wanes, coaches should not hesitate to affect a change.

Though their portraits may fade and the pages of their works turn yellow, these philosophers (Plato, Marcus Aurelius), economists (Adam Smith, John Nash), adventurers (T.E. Lawrence), and thinkers (Niccolo Machiavelli) have plenty to offer. Coaches should keep an open mind; there are plenty of resources to help them lead and deal with new situations that occur. These six thinkers have a similar outlook, based on their stoicism and belief that it is the individual who must make anything happen.

Coaches exert a great deal of control. Over the years, many disasters which were caused by bad management were caused by ignorance. Coaches, or anyone for that matter, shouldn't exert control if they do not know what they are doing. On the other hand, basketball is a chaotic, phonetic, and freeform game. It can never be converted entirely in a controlled, literal, and organized scouting report. All things considered, scouting remains an important aspect of basketball.

Ship, Service, Self is a traditional navy motto. The idea is that individuals are loyal to their team before themselves and everyone is responsible for the collective outcome. Players should feel likewise about their team and coaches should engender that reaction. A device that can make players feel more accountable to the team is this log which asks what they did to help the team today.

In Ontario, students must complete forty hours of community service before graduating high school. This was instituted in the 1990s when the provincial government felt that teenagers were lacking a combination of work ethic, morals, or empathy for the less fortunate. Unfortunately, most Junior Varsity players (Grade 9s and 10s) have no idea where to get started. Some even worry about whether they will be able to finish the requisite hours in time. First of all, there's no need for stress: forty hours over four years is not much. Secondly, there are many resources available for these student/athletes.

Everyone is responsible for keeping the team together, coaches and players. The group should have value for every team member, who should all contribute to its continuing success. Coaches focus on building the team early in the season but may neglect maintaining the squad throughout the year and for subsequent seasons.

Since school is back in session, a number of elite basketball teams are back in the gym. For some, tryouts and official practices have not yet started, so prime gym time may be reserved for Girls' Basketball or Boys' Volleyball, leaving a teacher-coach to do what he can to push the team to get better. Short, high intensity, open workouts can easily slide into the lunch hour.

In the classroom and on the court, discipline is closely correlated with success. When some of a student-athlete's energy is devoted to disruptive behaviour, they cannot perform at their best. When other players see a peer bending the rules, they feel resentful and entitled to the same benefits. These creative agreements aim to motivate players to take responsibility for their actions and encourage commitment to the team. When young people start to take responsibility for themselves and the team, success follows.

I coach the New College Division I Men's Team, serving as Tex Winter to Kash's Phil Jackson, because the team meets my needs. Weekly games and a casual atmosphere enhanced by exemplary talent and a tremendous desire to win. My philosophy is to make it fun - teaching a few tricks from time to time so the team defends more effectively or scores more points - enabling the players to do what they do.

Improving quickness is imperative for all basketball teams due to the role the performance factor plays in the sport. Steve Nash maintains quickness among the attributes that he aims to annually improve. Whatever his absolute quickness, he believes that he can always increase his standard relative to his peers and relative to his previous results.

Coaches spend significant time teaching the players on the teams that they coach. Including skills, systems, and more, lessons on and off the court determine whether a team will succeed or not. Knowing how players learn can help coaches employ the right teaching strategies, use effective learning aids, schedule practices and team meetings at the optimal time, and understand who learns better in groups and who prefers to work alone.

None of these skills are particularly difficult although they require practice to improve. Teams that make these skills a habit will succeed at any level of basketball.
